DALAMAN AIRPORT

The international airport for Fethiye, Marmaris and other holiday destinations in this part of southwest Turkey is in Dalaman but there is much more to this small Mediterranean town than a tourism hub. Situated between Marmaris and Fethiye, Dalaman has a thriving agricultural sector and many of its 20,000 population are involved in growing an abundance of fruit and vegetables, particularly oranges and pomegranates. Of course, this means there is some delicious food served in the region’s many restaurants, making a visit to this part of Turkey a must for foodies.

All of Turkey has a rich historical past, and Dalaman is no exception. What’s more, the neighbouring towns and villages also have many fascinating ruins from previous civilisations, stretching back over thousands of years, and being situated in some of the most beautiful countryside and diverse geography in the province of Muğla, there is a wealth of glorious beaches, lakes, mountains and thermal baths. All this makes it the perfect place not only to relax but also for more energetic activities like trekking, cycling, canoeing and sailing.

Situated just a short drive from the coast, Dalaman also has a lake on its doorstep. Kocagol Lake, is not only the largest in the region, at 40 metres, it’s the deepest too. This area is famous for its rich wetland areas, and home to many species of plants and wildlife, some of which are endemic.

Although the beautiful cove of Sarsala has an access road, many of the breath-taking bays around Dalaman can only be reached by yacht or gullet; sailing on this part of the Turkish coast is something for which Turkey is justifiably famous. However, there are also charming, locally organised, daily boat trips.

Just up the road from Dalaman, Dalyan is a thriving town that certainly makes the most of the river delta, on which it is located. The iconic 7km sandbar of Iztuzu is a beautiful beach where, for millions of years, fascinating, but increasingly rare and now endangered, Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta caretta) visit every year to lay their eggs.

The centre of the bustling town is the perfect place to shop and enjoy the many friendly restaurants. An hour’s drive away is the colourful and busy town of Fethiye. As well as being full of historical sites, restaurants and shops, a visit to its Tuesday market is an essential part of any visit, not just for the lively banter, but also for some incredible bargains.
